I needed this item primarily to test receptacles that were GFI-protected by special circuit breakers installed the main power panel of my house. It worked just fine. Pressing the "GFCI test" button on the top of the tester trips the GFI circuit, cutting power (in my case) to the entire protected circuit and forcing you (in my case) to trot down to the main panel to re-set the GFI breaker involved. Remember (in such a case) to test that ALL the receptacles on the GFI-protected circuit are "hot," then press the button on the tester, and check again to ascertain that ALL (the same) receptacles have gone "dead." Then re-set the breaker to get your receptacle power back.
